Description
Oral history. Born in England and came to New Zealand aged 17 years and sent to work on Bernard Chambers Te Mata farm in Hawke's Bay. Then worked at Eketahuna on a dairy farm. 1915 applied for job as solicitor's clerk for A B Bennett before joining up for War 1915 as a gunner with the Royal New Zealand Artillery in France. On his return to Manaia he became greenkeeper for the tennis, bowling and croquet clubs. Worked iin shops in Manaia and Hawera. Married Joan Pinson 1942, but she died young. Stuart raised their three children. A keen gardener, he lived in the house he had owned since 1943 until his death on the 22 June 1996.
