Description
Oral history recording. Born in Hawera and family lived in Manaia. Describes schooling and fishing for trout after school in the rivers. Went hunting in the winter for rabbits and quail. Describes life at the time with still a few horse drawn gigs, shops at Manaia and Kaupokonui, Ngaere Gardens, unsealed roads. During the War supplied eggs to Wellington and honey to Internal Marketing Division. Was in the Home Guard with a Pill Box at the mouth of the Kaupokonui Stream. Married a Land Girl in 1947. Increased the number of bees after the war with hives as far away as Whangamomona. Describes Whangamomona and the changes. Hatched 45-50,000 chickens. Sold bees mid 60's, poultry 1980's.
