Description
Oral history recording. Hugh (known as Peter) Hallewell (born 1932) talks about his schooling at Central School and New Plymouth Boys' High School, followed by a Fitter and Turner apprentice at Cambrian Engineering. Describes his work there - very reptitive, no overalls, earmuffs, safety boots or glasses. In 1953 he got a job working for for J.B. McEwan making cheese crates. Peter then joined Cameron and Boulton for 2-3 years, then returned to Cambrian as a foreman in 1956. He travelled to Australia and Japan in 1983 to study quality control and robotics. Became assistant works manager 1972 until in his retirement in 1993.
