Description
Ornately carved wooden base with three legs with a brass shaft and cross arm supporting a bead work textile hanging. The hanging depicts a heraldic shield, flanked by two unicorns and a crown with animals atop. Above the crown us written " IN DEFENCE " within a tan banner. It is edged with a geometric design in black, grey and white. Threaded beads are looped along the sides and bottom edges. The bottom edge of the hanging is shaped to a point at centre.

Fireguards were used to protect the women’s faces as they sat by the fire. Otherwise, the heat from the fire would have disturbed make-up and left women with a reddened complexion.
