This kind of weapon was known as 4 pound Martini's, as this is what was paid for them. The SAT (South African Trophy) weapons were formally brought back to New Zealand after the South African War and distributed. The " HG " marks and white paint around the stock relate to its registration during World War II for Home Guard services. " 8 " was the mark for the New Plymouth region and the white band denotes that it was a non-standard calibre weapon which would be suitable for drill purposes only. It was the 600th weapon to be inspected and recorded in this district.
