I came across reference to this piece in my mother Eileen's records and, after a search online was given a link to your page to find it. Hilton Hurrell was her father, my grandfather with ships and boatbuilding in his blood and the son of a Royal Navy seaman, George Hurrell who farmed at Eltham with his wife Fanny Shotter Hurrell for many decades until his death in 1941. As a young man, Hilton played violin at social gatherings around Taranaki and his violin is one of our treasured posessions in a family of "collectors". Wonderful to see a picture of the compass.
