A modified French Berthier 8mm calibre cavalry carbine with a bolt action and box magazine. " H.17872 " is marked on the butt and bolt. " St. Etienne Mle 1890 " is marked on the belt housing.
Carbines like these were used by French truck drivers, engineers or other second line troops during World War I. Little is known about the history of this particular carbine but it may have been a New Zealand soldier's souvenir which he brought home from the trenches.
