A shoemaker's hammer with a wooden handle and metal head. The head has a large, flat face and a long flat peen that is slightly downturned. " VALKHUENZI / BERN " appears to be stamped on the top of the head though the first portion of the word " VALKUENZI " is unclear.

This shoemaker's hammer was used by Robert Graham, who owned a boot repair and saddlery shop in Queen Street, Waitara. These hammers were used for driving large nails and for hammering the damped sole and heel leather to consolidate it. Shoemaker's hammers were also used for the process known as paning or peening.
