 Description
An 1896 model 7mm calibre Mauser rifle with a five shot box magazine. "O.V.S. / 438 " is marked on the breech block and stock. " B1885 " is the serial number on the bolt and " J " is roughly carved on the butt. It also features an Anchor mark which is the commercial monogram of Ludwig and Loewe.

This weapon was probably taken as a private trophy from the South African War as it is not South African 'trophy marked'. The OVS mark denotes it was purchased by Oranje Vrij Staat (Orange Free State) in a contract of 1500 rifles which arrived in South Africa in 1897. It is a good early example despite some of its rough modifications.
