Description
(James) Peter Quilliam (1920-2004) wearing legal gown and wig. Born in New Plymouth, he was the third generation of a family of lawyers, his grandfather J.H. Quilliam having served as temporary judge of the Supreme Court and his father R.H. Quilliam being Crown Solicitor. After a career as a barrister and crown prosecutor in Taranaki, Peter served as a Supreme Court then High Court judge from 1969-88 before becoming first head of the Police Complaints Authority. He was knighted in 1987.
