Description
Firefighter Gordon Charles Bellringer (1899-1967) in uniform. Gordon was the grandson of an early Chief Fire Officer and his father was also a member. Gordon joined the New Plymouth Fire Brigade on 17 October 1942, and served for the rest of his life, laterly in the Fire Police. During World War Two he lived on site at the fire station. Gordon trained and worked as plumber after leaving school, through the Depression years, then joined the family firm Bellringer Brothers, working in their Devon Street hardware store and the Gill Street bulk store. But when the fire alarm sounded, his work as a fireman took priority.
