Royal New Zealand Air Force Officer Rayford James Lawrence served during World War II as an air gunner in the Pacific. He married Beryl Mack (m. 1949) and owned a garage in Urenui. He died in a light plane crash along with his two Air Force comrades and childhood friends, Len and Fred Johnson, in June 1963.

Service # nz433315. Born in Waitara on 28th May 1924.Son of William Burton West Lawrence and Alice nee Smith farmers of Uruti. Educated at Uruti school and NPBHS,he enlisted in the RNZAF in September 1942. Bru Lawrence served as air gunner in the Pacific until his discharge in November 1945.He married Beryl Mack in 1949 and ran the garage in Urenui until his tragic death in a light plane crash along with his two airforce mates and childhood friends,Len and Fred Johnson, in June 1963.
