Compass
Description
A small metal compass with a very small point held in an adjustable clamp at the end of one arm and an adjustable clamp on the end of the other arm.The compass has a grooved handle with a small knob at one end. The arms can be adjusted with a screw mechanism and there is a length of dark wire wrapped around one arm as a makeshift repair.

This

Carrington
(1862-1948),
a
notable
Taranaki
surveyor,
nephew
of
Frederick
and
Wellington
Carrington,
and
son
of
Octavius
Carrington.
He
began
his
career
as
a
survey
cadet
in
the
Taranaki
Provincial
Lands
Department
and
was
employed
by
the
West
Coast
Commission
during
the
early
1880s.
He
went
on
to
work
in
Wellington
and
Hawke's
Bay
and
established
a
glowing
professional
reputation
before
returning
to
work
in
New
Plymouth.
Follett
Carrington
retired
in
1918.
