Compass
Description
A small metal compass with a point at the end of one arm and a socket designed to hold a lead or drawing nib.The compass has a ribbed bulb on the handle. "HALDEN" is stamped on one arm and "A" and "M" is stamped either side of a crown on the other arm.

This
compass
was
used
by
Follett
Carrington
(1862-1948),
a
notable
Taranaki
surveyor,
nephew
of
Frederick
and
Wellington
Carrington,
and
son
of
Octavius
Carrington.
He
began
his
career
as
a
survey
cadet
in
the
Taranaki
Provincial
Lands
Department
and
was
employed
by
the
West
Coast
Commission
during
the
early
1880s.
He
went
on
to
work
in
Wellington
and
Hawke's
Bay
and
established
a
glowing
professional
reputation
before
returning
to
work
in
New
Plymouth.
Follett
Carrington
retired
in
1918.
