This piano belonged to the Richmond family who believed in a high-level education for their children and encouraged them to learn to read literature and play music. It is likely that many members of the Richmond family, including women living in the household, would have learnt to play music by popular musicians such as Queen Victoria’s favourite composer, Franz Schubert.
