A Snider Mark III action .577 calibre artillery carbine with brass butt plate, trigger guard and nose cap. " III / N.Z 135" is marked on the receiver. The lock plate is marked " B S A & M Co / 1878 " along with a crown and " V.R " . "1" and a sold from service mark along with " 1 " is marked on the butt. A faint " NZ " and an illegible number is also marked on the stock. A cleaning rod accompanies the carbine.
While this carbine was manufactured after the New Zealand Wars had ended it is very similar to those used in the later campaigns of the wars.
