Callipers

Description
A set of large wooden callipers. The callipers have a metal hinge near one end and a metal brace which can be fastened by two wingnuts about 25cm down from the hinge. A rounded handle is at the top. A metal screw is fitted to the end of either arm to help protect them from wear.

These callipers, which belonged to the Inglewood Municipal Band, were used to precisely measure the alignment of band members when on parade or competing at contests. At contests the drum majors were responsible for setting their bands up correctly, and callipers were then used to by judges to ensure spacing was correct. If band members were even slightly out of place then points could be deducted.
