 Description
A 1796 pattern British light cavalry trooper's sword with a plain wrought iron scabbard. The sword has a curved, broad fullered steel blade with a flat back and a wrought iron stirrup hilt. The wooden grip of the sword is covered in leather. " WOOLLEY " is marked on the back of blade. " B " is also marked on the back of the blade together with another unidentified mark which looks a little like a partial " 8 " The blade has been broken and then repaired, a repair mark is visible 22cm back from the tip. The scabbard is fitted with two narrow bands to take loose suspension rings but the lower suspension ring is missing.

This sword may have belonged to Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky. There have been claims made this is the sword that he was carrying when he was killed at the battle of Te Ngutu o Te Manu in September 1868 but there are other claims which dispute this.
