Sword, 1854 Rifle Volunteers

Description
An 1854 pattern rifle volunteers sword with a basket type steel handguard featuring a crown above a bugle. The blade is engraved and features the crown and cypher of Queen Victoria on one side. On the other side a crown features above " 29th W.R.Y. Rifle Volunteers" and " Charles Alfred Hemingway, Esquire". The nickle plated scabbard is battered.

This sword originally belonged to Captain Charles Alfred Hemingway, who served as a surgeon in the 29th West Riding of Yorkshire Rifle Volunteer Corps. It was collected and brought to New Zealand by Edward Frederick Hemingway.
