A Snider Mark III patent .577 Yeomanry carbine with a brass butt strap with a trap and a brass trigger guard. " 1870 Enfield " is marked on the lock. " N^Z 87 " is marked on the housing and stock. " RBYF 34 " is marked on the stock under the breech.

Government
1887
contract.
The
carbine
would
have
been
made
by
cutting
down
an
1853
pattern
Enfield
rifle.
This
weapon
would
not
have
been
brought
in
for
the
army
but
it
may
have
been
issued
to
someone
from
a
mounted
volunteers
unit.
Carbines
were
well
suited
for
use
in
the
New
Zealand
bush.
