Floral Fete at Pukekura Park

Production date
09 Nov 1899
Description
A man and two girls wearing Venetian fancy dress costume aboard a boat decorated to look like a gondola, decorated with flowers. Part of the annual Floral Fete to celebrate the Prince of Wales birthday, held in Pukekura Park (then known as the Recreation Grounds) on 9 November 1896.

This was one of five photographs and an article on the fete that ran in the Auckland Weekly News 24 November, 1899, p.7. According to the columnist, 'A. Tramp, esq', "The award of the Judges was not the popular verdict [which] went in favour of a very fair representation of a Venetian gondola, steered by a gondolier, resplendent in a red and black suit and guilt ornaments." The gondola won second prize. This was the first year the fete had been put on as a small aquatic carnival.
