Both women are wearing similar styles of gowns that emphasize a narrow waist and bustle shape at the back. The sleeves are puffed at the shoulder and taper to more narrow at the elbow. The woman on the viewer's left is wearing a pink checked gown with a brown striped underskirt. The fabric is pulled up and draped over the bustle and decorated with brown bows. The other woman is wearing a black dress with blue fabric draped over the back of the skirt and pleated over the bustle. It has a line of matching blue bows down the front.
