Description
Leather ambrotype case containing both an ambroytpe and paper based print (probably matte silver gelatin chloride printing-out paper print) with a handwritten annotation that reads "Annis / Lewis and Annis".
Annis Bracken neé Hirst, daughter of Thomas Hirst of Brackenhirst, married Lewis Alexander Hammerton, son of Holden Hammerton of New Plymouth, on 25 May 1859.
Annis and Lewis are seated and have their hands clasped in their laps. Lewis has a moustache and wears circular spectacles, a high neck collar and large bow tied at the throat.Annis is wearing a dress with a white lace collar and cameo at the throat. Her hair is parted in the middle and is covered with a dark lace head piece. Hand tinting is apparent on Lewis' waistcoat and Annis' dress buttons and cameo brooch.
The photographic print is adhered to a sheet of paper fitted into the case's lid. It is presumed that she is the same woman pictured in the ambrotype portrait. It depicts the aged Annis seated and knitting. She is wearing a dress, beaded necklaces, white lace bonnet and circular spectacles.

The newspaper reports that on the 25th May 1859, Lewis Alexander, second son of Holden Hammerton [probably should be Hamerton], of New Plymouth, married Annis Bracken, third daughter of Thomas Hirst, of Brackenhirst.
