Credit line
This unusual pitchfork may have been used for stacking wheat or oat sheaves rather than for haymaking. Taranaki was considered a major wheat growing area until, in the 1870s, hard-grained wheat varieties replaced the softer-grained types as it was more suitable for stone grinding and preferred higher rainfall areas.
