Description
A Victory Medal. The yellow bronze medal features a standing Victory figure on the obverse. The figure is holding a palm branch in her left facing hand and extending her right facing arm. " THE GREAT / WAR FOR / CIVILISATION / 1914-1919 " is marked on the reverse inside a leaf design. " 12/1020 2/LT. F.W. WATSON N.Z.E.F." is inscribed on the edge. The ribbon is a double rainbow colour with crimson on the edges and red in the centre and is fitted with a mentioned in dispatches oak leaf clasp. It is mounted as part of a group of four.

This Victory Medal was awarded to 2nd Lieutenant Frederick William Watson who was killed in action at Messines, France on 7 July 1917. He was the great-grandson of Josiah and Ann Flight, who arrived in New Plymouth on the Timandra in 1842.
