Breeches, Riding
Description
A pair of formal riding breeches. These are are slightly shorter at the leg than trousers. They are made of navy blue wool with a red stripe down each side. The back waistline is shaped upward and has buttons inside to attach suspenders. The garment has side pockets and a button fly. The inside label reads: "Hobson & Sons" and in handwriting below "Capt. R.S. Matthews 7/4759".

resident
who
was
prominent
in
the
military,
serving
in
the
Hawera
Mounted
Rifles,
the
South
African
War,
the
New
Zealand
Staff
Corps
and
as
an
Assistant
Quartermaster
General.
He
retired
in
the
1920s
and
when
he
died
in
1931
a
Taranaki
Herald
obituary
noted
that
"his
kindly,
courteous,
and
interesting
personality
will
be
greatly
missed
from
this
district
where
he
has
been
held
for
many
years
in
the
very
highest
esteem."
