Description
A small wooden doll's cradle painted or varnished dark brown on the outside. The cradle is sitting on two rockers and has a wooden cover at the head. It has a small knob on one side. A typed label with provenance details is stuck to the base of the cradle. "For New/ Plymouth Old/ Colonists Museum (Lister Family) This/ CRADLE/ WAS Made/ in 1846/ AT LIVERPOOL./ Belonged to Eleanor Lister (Mrs [illegible]) is written on the base itself. Remnants of another label are still evident at the head of the cradle.
Eleanor's father drowned in 1848, her step-father was John Evans. Eleanor's later surnames were Jordan, Kirby and Way. See portrait SW1923-1930.02387.

This cradle was made for Eleanor Lister. After being widowed, Eleanor and her three children came to New Zealand on the Hannibal in 1875. She settled in New Plymouth where her brother, Thomas Potter Lister, was already living.
