Baldwin Locomotive #295
Production date
1914
Description
A group of ten men with the #295 Baldwin Locomotive (c.1898). Locomotive is on wooden slides in the bush. Twelve locomotives were ordered from the American manufacturer Baldwin in 1898. These were distributed to Northland (one), Wellington/Napier/New Plymouth (four), and Westport (two). This photograph is similar to that showing a de-railed ballast train in Taranaki taken by C.F.Volzke (possibly at Waipuku). The brakes failed on the train when it was descending a steep incline. The driver, fireman, and guard escaped injury by jumping clear before the impact (as reported in 'The Auckland Weekly News' Jan 9th 1914).
