A narrative describing life on the upper Mokau River. In September 1927, Robert Wells was appointed sole teacher to the Mangatoi School 16 miles up the Mokau River. He was given board and lodgings by the Rutland family on the Pukeruru Station. Robert tells of his arrival with a description of the Pukeruru Station, Mangatoi School, education and life on the river which at that time was feeling the effects of the depression.
