Description
Raised in Otago, J.A. Valentine took up his teaching career in 1870 as a pupil teacher at Waikouaiti. By the turn of the century, he was Principal of Timaru South School. In 1920 he took the position of Senior Inspector of Schools for the Taranaki region, retiring in 1920. In his retirement, Valentine served on the Taranaki Education Board, the Victoria College Council, the Senate of the University of New Zealand, the Taranaki Justices of the Peace Association and also acted as Leader of the Young Men's Bible Class of the Baptist Church in New Plymouth. In 1946, he was awarded the OBE. The autobiographical notes and reminiscences describe Valentine's upbringing and various events in his life.
