Unidentified letter

Production date
Circa 1856
Description
An unidentified and undated personal letter referring to family matters and mentioning the names Emily and Harry, both appear to be in New Zealand, possibly New Plymouth. The writer appears to be corresponding from London and is presumably a woman, writes in a conversational style and mentions unnamed ships arriving with mail from Australia and the news of the death of Charles Hotham, Governor of Victoria (31 December 1855). The letter jokes about the birth of a New Zealand baby and asks if it bears marks to identify it, includes a drawing showing a baby with almost full body tattoo (moko).
A transcript of the letter is available.
