Taranaki Regiment. Reunion Committee

Description
The Regiment came into being on the 13th January 1859 when a Proclamation of the Governor Sir Thomas Gore Browne, the Taranaki Volunteer Rifle Company came into being. It was the first rifle unit to be formed in New Zealand.
In 1921 the Regiment was formed from the rifle company. In 1948 the two regiments combined into one and known as "The Wellington West Coast and Taranaki Regiments" and still functions today.
Many of the personnel of the regiments served in the South African War in early 1900's, The Great War.1914 - 18 and the 1939 - 45 campaign in the various services.
The members names included in the reunion registers served in both the First and Second World Wars. The registers have only a small portion of early members.
A mini reunion was held in Christchurch in 1979 and the larger reunion held at New Plymouth in 1991. As they had no facilities in New Plymouth to house the reunion, both floors of the New Plymouth Racecourse were used, with closed circuit communication between floors.
Two registers containing the names of men who served with the Regiment during the First and Second World Wars and were able to be contacted for the reunions in 1979 and 1991. The registers have only a small portion of early members.
