Description
Wooden hand operated washing machine on four legs with hinged lid and metal plate affixed to the base. There is a metal wheel at one end that operates the cogged mechanism on the top which rotates a six rodded dolly peg on the interior. The interior has an agitator bay r that swings from tabs at either side. Water and soap is feed from a side compartment on the short end.

Anthony Wayne Manufacturing Company, Indiana, USA, circa 1890-1900. This hand-operated washing machine dates to about 1890-1900. The metal wheel at one end operates the cogged mechanism on the top which rotates a six rodded dolly peg inside it. The interior has an agitator bay that swings from tabs at either side. Water and soap is feed from a side compartment on the short end. Washing was dried outside when possible. It was thrown over hedges, laid flat on the grass or fixed to a line with wooden pegs.
