Tape 1 Side 1:
Born 1922, Stratford, father was a farmer. Mother died while children were young. Attended Stratford Primary & Solway College. Hoped to be a doctor but father disapproved. Attended Dental School, Wellington. 1940 draft - first through the new training school. Lived in a hostel. Training was 2 years minimum. Talks of training as a dental nurse - dental & medical subjects (very full, reads this). Graduated 1942, first sent to Ohura, arrived by train late at night. Stayed there two years, serving schools in the district. Travel was by cadging a lift to the schools - no petrol. Recounts a number of funny stories. After she was married, she talks of being the only nurse for miles, tending people in the district. She was transferred to the Stratford Clinic because her father was ill. Stayed there 2 years. Married 1945. Retrained in her early fifties - felt dentistry was easier by then - sent to Inglewood, then schools in New Plymouth. Noticed changes in teeth due to fluoride.
Tape 1 Side 2:
Married 1945, gave up dental nursing and moved to Kohuratahi where she raised a family of four. Describes living in the country - getting electricity and the telephone. Went back to dental nursing after 26 years - talks of effect of fluoride. Describes hobbies and past times.
