Tape 1 Side 1:

Born 1914, Little River, Canterbury. Talks about his childhood on the Banks Peninsular. Father died when he was 12. Started work aged 15 - farming, labouring etc. Served with the army during war - unfit for overseas service. Went farming at Kaiwaka in Northland, owned a shoe shop in New Plymouth, Chaired the trust that owned the (than) Taranaki Savings Bank, patron of the Fitzroy Surf Club, involved in local Businessmen's Associations.

Tape 1 Side 2:

Talks of family - genealogical information Pawson family came to NZ 1840's, Barclay family 1870s from Scotland. The latter were very interested in public affairs. Talks of his personal involvement in community organisations and politics - serving as member of parliament for New Plymouth electorate. Awarded MBE 1968 and QSM 1983.
