Oral history. Irene describes her childhood 14 miles up the Mokau River (Mill Flat) where her father was milling timber. She describes living in isolation up the Mokau River, the accommodation for workers and towing trees to mill by barge. She went to University and trained as a teacher and returned to the Mokau - teaching at both Mangatoi and MacFord Schools. Irene talks of the farms in the area that supplied cream to the Mokau Dairy factory. A coal mine and a lime kiln were still operating close to Mangato and mentions various boats plying the river and bridges etc. She names families and individuals prominent in the area including The Chamber Bros, Mackford farm and school, Mr MacKenzie and Mr Radford, Cecil Randall, Charlie Wright, Harold Jones, Eric Lewes, the Cartwright family, the Rutland family, and Jack Webster.
