Mills family

Production date
1875?-1990
Description
Stanley Matthew Mills was born c.1890 in Dunsandel, Canterbury. As a child, he moved to Taranaki with his parents William Theodore and Christina, settling in Midhirst. On leaving Stratford High School, he worked on the land. His future wife, Bertha Olausen, a teacher at Midhirst School was boarding with his family and persuaded Stanley to take up teaching. He trained at Hillsborough School and taught at Whangamomona, Rarotonga, Cook Islands and Wellington where Stanley developed the New Zealand Correspondence School and was instrumental in radio broadcasts to schools. In 1935 he was appointed School Inspector in Auckland and in 1947, Senior Inspector in Southland. Two years later the family moved back to Taranaki where Stanley took up the position of Senior Inspector, retiring in 1950. He died in New Plymouth in 1969.
The collection consists of Stanley and Bertha's papers, information and photos on Stanley's parents (William Theodore and Christina Mills) and Bertha's family. The collection was eventually passed on to Stanley and Bertha's eldest daughter Muriel MacLeod who added further information; specifically information on her own family.
