Description
Born and educated in New Plymouth, Sergeant Pilot Bert Wipiti of 243 Squadron, R.A.F. was the first Maori pilot to leave New Zealand for overseas duty during Second World War and the first British pilot to shoot down enemy aircraft over Singapore in 1942. He was reported missing, presumed dead, after combat over northern France on 3 October 1943.
