Description
Respected Te Atiawa kaumatua Fauntleroy Aldershot "Hip" Fenton (1919-2005) had extensive knowledge of local history and a passion for archaeology and the stories of his people. Hip was keen to share his knowledge, often taking guided tours of the 1860s Land Wars sites along the south bank of the Waitara River.
This archive consists of a copy of Hip Fenton's tour guide notes, titled 'The Waitara War: Tour with Hip' and 'Take a Hip History Trip'. The guide consists of notes, maps, diagrams and drawings and tells the history of the New Zealand Colonial and British Imperial troops efforts to crush Maori resistance in the Waitara area during the Taranaki Wars in the 1860s.

Dad's first name is Fauntleroy; the name of Hip is derived from the word hipi, a word in Maori for sheep! A curly headed child, he lived in Rona Road, Waitara.
