Description
A translation of Anton Fromm's diary relating his adventures on leaving his home town Malons in the district of Beundter, Switzerland. Translated from German by Miss N. Newman, Matamata.
The diarist writes in a flowing descriptive style relating exploits, adventures and encounters while on his travels.
He sails on the ship Somersetshire for Melbourne and stayings in Australia for approximately 18 months,serving with Colonial troops before sailing on the Ararwata for New zealand. He arrives in Taranaki and describes looking for work, travelling though the countryside, giving his first impressions of New Zealand. He lived in Inglewood before joining up with the Armed Constabulary and was present at the sacking of Parihaka 1881. He was resident at Parihaka for some months and describes Christmas festivities 1881.
