Description
Throughout the country, during the late 1970s and early 80s, the Government paid for work schemes for the unemployed. At this time the New Plymouth section of the Salvation Army, began a community work scheme which experimented with developing methods of sand retention on New Plymouth beaches. Lead by Michael Smither and Graham Kirk, a work team, in an effort to trap the sand, built biodegradable structures on the beach using green waste and driftwood.
The collection consists of work diaries 1982-1984 and a photographic record of restoration work on New Plymouth foreshore. The earlier photos show changes on the beach between the Te Henui and Waiwakaiho Rivers, the later photos depict the effects of various forms in relation to sand retention and movement.
