Object Detail

An autograph book belonging to Mary Humphries. Many of the entries are the response to twenty three questions such as favourite virtue, most disliked person etc. A number of those who have inscribed in the book are military personnel and local dignitaries The book also contains three humorous illustrations by Tom Bent, Royal Marines. Two depict scenes of women refugees and the other shows a fictional Maori attack on the Humphries house (Montosa) based on a raid on Fort Niger on 18 August 1860 during which Bent commanded the guard (this is one of the few known images of Fort Niger).
