Taranaki Punch [newspaper]
Production date
1860-1861
Description
Taranaki Punch was first published by the Taranaki Herald as a fortnightly publication, the first issue appearing on 31 October 1860. The publication lasted for sixteen issues, the final issue appearing on 7 August 1861. It was born out of settler hostility to Government handling of the First Taranaki War and gave beleaguered locals something to laugh about. It's satirical humour and cutting jibes made it an abrasive and controversial publication. Taranaki Herald editor Garland William Woon helped produce the magazine while the illustrator was local dentist Henry Rawson.
