Description
William Bocock (1854-1926) and his wife Betsy Ann Bocock (nee Smith) (1855-1933) immigrated from England in 1875 on the ship Halcione.
William's diary relates the daily events experienced during the voyage of the Halcione from Gravesend to New Plymouth between May and September 1875. It contains descriptions of the weather, seasickness, food and medical conditions on board, animals and the mood amongst the passengers including instances of fighting and theft. William also describes their first sighting of Mount Egmont/Taranaki and life in the town of New Plymouth, encounters with local Maori, wages offered to the male immigrants for labour and he and Betsy's arrival at their new home in the bush.
