Photocopy of 'The Life and Times of Captain Edward Carthew', a booklet privately published in 1947.
Carthew was born in England and was admitted to the Bar before embarking on a military career. He came to NZ of the ship George Cunning in 1860, arriving in Nelson. In 1863, he was appointed Captain in the Taranaki Militia, a position he held until 1866. After trying his hand once again in law, Carthew returned to his land in Okato, where he died in 1875, aged 56 years.
