Description
Henry Wood, a farmer in the Ngaere Swamp area, was born at Frankley Road on 8 April 1873, where his parents, Henry and Colina were farming. His early life was spent helping his parents clear the bush. He also worked on the road gangs around the Central Taranaki region.
He married Eva Ford of Eltham on the 5th July 1906, they had three daughters and one son. Much of his farming life was spent draining the swamplands, he was also a member of the Eltham Drainage Board.
The typescript "The Life of a Pioneer Farmer" gives a description of his life from boyhood to retirement and reflects upon the hardships he and his contemporaries endured. An interview with his Grandmother Phillipa Wood (nee Inch) ex William Bryan is also included, along with family biographical data and photographs of his property at various stages of development. Henry died on 1 June 1956, at New Plymouth.
