Description
Daughter of Jerssey and Arnold George, Doris Bensel L.R.S.M. was a pianist, organist and music teacher in New Plymouth, and a member of the George Brothers' Orchestra, employed in the Theatre Royal.
In 1972 Mrs Bensel helped form a Young Musical Performers Club to provide an opportunity to perform before a live audience. Her studio at was located at 18 Massey Street. She died in 1991.
Rupert George, elder brother of Doris was also a musician and player of many stringed instruments including the balalaika. He taught violin and piano accordian.
A collection of manuscripts, newspaper clippings and reminiscences relating to early life in Taranaki and includes notes on musical events, nursing in New Plymouth and a history of fires and fire-fighting in New Plymouth.
