Description
Herbert N Silk, born in 1864 emigrated to New Zealand with his parents Thomas and Eliza in 1880 on the ship Hannah Landles. In 1891, Herbert settled in Purangi. He married Jean Revell and together, they had four children - Fred (author of the manuscript), Meta, Bert and Phyllis.
Herbert managed and later owned the Purangi general store and ran the Post and Telegraph Office . He was also Justice of the Peace.
The manuscript, written by Fred Silk is titled The Story of Purangi and covers the settlement and development of Purangi, giving biographical information early settlers. Letter and photographs pertinent to the manuscript are also included.
