Description
A survey fieldbook containing detailed survey maps of the Parihaka district, Egmont County, Taranaki. Drawings and maps show land features, locations of peach trees, Te Whiti's clearing, Pungarehu, military redoubts etc.

Stuart Newall emigrated to New Zealand from Scotland in 1863, where he began his military career. He was to hold a number of posts and in June 1879 led a party of Armed Constabulary to Taranaki from the Waikato where he had been based building roads and bridges. Part of his duties in Taranaki included surveying the coastal road south of Hangatahua (Stony) River. When Parihaka was raided, he was one of the two officers responsible for arresting Te Whiti o Rongomai, Tohu Kākahi and Hiroki. Newall's name is commemorated in Newall Road, south of Warea.
