Description
Born in Cheshire, England 1873, Ernest Denham emigrated to NZ in 1894. After working at Okato and Opunake, Ernest purchased land and built a house on Palmer Road, Mahoe. He then returned to England to marry but his fiance refused to emigrate. He returned to NZ without her and subsequently married Elizabeth Eggers.
Abbreviated entries gives a view of the lifestyle of the diarist five years prior to emigration.
Ernest Denham writes of his apprenticeship, attending evening classes and recreation. On 28th June 1894, he sailed from the Royal Albert Dock, London on the ship Ruapehu, arriving in New Plymouth in August. He briefly describes employment in Taranaki and returned to England a year later, arriving Sept 29th 1895. 16 days later, he sailed from London on board the ship Orizaba, bound for Sydney before transferring to other ships and making his way to Taranaki. The last entry notes his marriage to Elizabeth Eggers.
